The board of the European Central Bank (ECB), including boss Mario Draghi, are in Nicosia on Wednesday andThursday as part of their schedule to hold two meetings outside of Frankfurt each year.
Draghi arrived in Cyprus late Tuesday under heavy security. He will meet President Nicos Anastasiades at 7.30pm on Wednesday at the palace, which will be followed by an official dinner.
Board committees are due to hold meetings on Wednesday at the Philoxenia conference centre ahead of the meeting of central bankers on Thursday where they will discuss the ECB’s money printing programme, which begins this month and aims to pump more than €1 trillion of new money into the euro economy over the next 18 months. After that a news conference will be held.
Greece is also expected to be on the agenda of the meeting.
A mass anti-austerity rally is slated for later on Wednesday to coincide with the meeting. Some 18 organsiations islandwide are expected to participate.
