The Cyprus Cricket Association (CCA) 2015 MoneyGram T20 League will get underway on Sunday at the UN Cricket ground in Nicosia.
The competition features at least three teams with reasonable chance of winning and another couple of teams that could possibly catch fire.
The early start of the league this year means that teams will play most of their games in pleasant spring weather and will be able to avoid playing under scorching heat during the summer months.
Richard Boxall, CCA League Manager, shared his views: “Last year’s winners Kazepis will start as favourites but could face a challenge from Fellows who won the recent 40-over league, and from the always competitive Mustangs.
“A welcome addition is the team from the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment (PWRR) based at Dhekelia, where matches will also be played. The league will be contested until early June and should provide some exciting cricket.”
This year’s league will be contested by eight teams and includes the Cyprus Development Squad, which will comprise of players vying for a place in the National Team.
Also, Amdocs will be re-entering a team after opting out of last year’s autumn 40-over competition. The other teams include PWRR Dhekeila, Fellows, Mustangs, Moufflons, Nicosia, and defending champions Kazepis.
Kazepis captain, Shafaqat Ali, was bullish about his team’s chances, saying: “We have a strong all round squad, which is capable of performing well and I have no doubt that we will be the eventual winners at the end of the competition. It’s important for me to get runs and wickets and lead from the front.
“We are also relying heavily on our star players Shahid Ali and Zahid Hussain for the runs. We would like to play an aggressive brand of cricket but within the spirit of the game.”
Mike Kyriacou, captain of Fellows CC, who were the winners of 2014 autumn 40-over competition and who are amongst the title contenders, was optimistic about his side’s chances: “We are a very strong unit and we will be playing to win the competition and will be looking to add one more trophy to our collection.”
Rudolph Crasto, Manager of Mustangs CC – who will be hoping to regain lost glory – was also upbeat about his side’s chances: “We believe we are the favourites to win the league! We want to regain the trophy and we will be the champions again in 2015.”
CCA Chairman, Muhammad Husain commented: “We expect a close title race this year. Teams have to perform to the best of their abilities and hope for good fortune. We are thankful to the competition sponsors MoneyGram International for their support.”
