In the first incident coming up to Easter this year, a 20-year-old from Droushia in Paphos was arrested for the alleged possession of 9,000 illegal firecrackers, which police believe came from the north.

Police said that during traffic checks on the Polis Chrysochous road they stopped the young man’s car and found the stash. He allegedly confessed that he had bought the firecrackers in the north.

It was the first haul of the illegal items, used extensively in the period before Easter, confiscated this year.
Police said they planned to step up their clampdown in the coming weeks.
