AKEL committees say Larnaca mayor failed to consult on name change for Piale Pasia

AKEL’s Larnaca and Famagusta district committees have accused Larnaca Mayor, Andreas Louroudjiatis of ignoring the municipal council and violating their decisions, according to Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

The party said the council was not asked for its opinion on a ceremony to rename Piale Pasia Street – a Turkish Cypriot name – to ‘Tasos Mitsopoulos’ in memory of the late government minister.

The district committees said in a statement that although they understood the gesture of respect to Mitsopoulos’ memory, the municipal council had been kept out of the loop.

“What we are complaining about is the mayor’s unauthorised move to arrange a ceremony citing the President’s support without informing or asking the municipal council,” the statement said.

The party said that due to the political nature of the move, the municipal council had asked the mayor to write to Interior Minister Socratis Hasikos, who they said had rejected the idea in his response, something the council had not been privy to, the statement said.

“We believe that any change on our part in renaming Turkish Cypriot places is a move that contradicts the firm positions of the Republic of Cyprus,” the statement said.

The committees have called on the mayor to cancel the ceremony and meet with the council in order to hear their views. The ceremony is scheduled for March 22.

Louroudjiatis told the Cyprus Mail on Friday he could not comment as he had not seen the allegations made against him.
