Kouyialis to seek EU support to designate local cheese as PDO

Nicos Kouyialis, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, will stress to EU and third countries’ Ambassadors the determination of Cyprus to proceed with the application for the designation of origin for the local cheese, halloumi.

In addition, according to CNA sources, he will stress to EU Ambassadors that their countries have lobbied in favour of demands by the Turkish Cypriots in the case of halloumi and will point out that it is unacceptable and unethical for EU member states to act against other member states.

Kouyialis, who pays a two-day official visit to Hungary, will attend on Friday a working breakfast in Budapest during which, the EU and Third countries’ Ambassadors will discuss issues related to the genetically modified organisms.

The Minister will ask for the support of EU partners for Cyprus’ application to designate halloumi as a product with Protected Designation of Origin.
