Paralimni man admitted to Athalassa after shots fired

A 30-year-old man from Paralimni was admitted to the Athalassa psychiatric hospital in Nicosia on Thursday after a mini-siege at his home ended with shots being fired. No one was injured.

According to police reports, the man had taken an unknown amount of pills, threatened his wife with a hunting gun and then locked himself in a room at his house.

When police arrived at the scene, the man fired three shots in the air. Police then called in specially-trained negotiating officers who managed to calm him down with the help of his mother, father and sister who were called to the house.

The man handed over the gun after several hours of negotiations and surrendered to police. He was taken Paralimni hospital and remained calm but when doctors began examining him, he again became agitated and aggressive, police said.

Doctors in Paralimini recommended he be examined by a psychiatrist and he was taken to Athalassa hospital.
