Celebrating light

By Maria Gregoriou

This year is the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). Many countries are celebrating the achievements of light science and its applications, while also raising awareness about its importance to humankind during this time and for the future development of global society. Monday is our turn to shine a light on such matters, as Larnaca is getting ready for a grand opening ceremony at the Municipal theatre at 8pm.

The event will start with a performance by Katerina Mina of the official IYL 2015 song, Rainbow of Light, which was composed by Linda Lamon. Then there will be a small speech by the director of Kition Planetarium and Observatory George Troullias. After that a short film about IYL 2015 will be screened, the Larnaca Mayor will welcome everyone to the event and to his city, and then there will be dance performances from the Dance School Mambo.

As the year is meant to raise awareness and spread knowledge, there will also be a small presentation in English on IYL 2015 and one on 100 years since Albert Einstein came up with the general theory of relativity, by Astrophysicist Alexander Prokofiev, from the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

This year also coincides with the anniversaries of a series of important milestones in the history of the science of light, including the works on optics by Ibn Al-Haytham in 1015, the notion of light as a wave proposed by Fresnel in 1815, and the electromagnetic theory of light propagation proposed by Maxwell in 1865.

By finding out about the importance of light-based technologies, we (or the future generation) may delve into the science of light and technology and discover or develop the next big thing in sustainable energy or community health. If we limit energy waste and reduce light pollution, the future will be bright.
