Free dental checks at main hospitals on Friday

The health ministry is offering free dental checks on Friday at mobile units to be stationed in the courtyards of the state hospitals in Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca Old Hospital during outpatient hours.

The campaign is entitled ‘Celebrating healthy smiles’.

“This action is part of the ministry of health’s mission to raise public awareness on the importance of preventive dental examinations,” it said in a statement.

“Lliterature has documented the link between oral health in general and particularly the relationship of oral health to various other diseases and conditions, such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.”

It said the lack of oral health also leads to serious social and economic costs.

“The vast majority of these costs relate to private spending which makes oral health susceptible to adverse developments in economic downturns,” the ministry added.

‘Celebrating healthy smiles’ is meant to emphasise the importance of oral health as an integral element of quality of life.

The ministry said to maintain good oral health it is advisable to brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, reduce consumption of sugar in the diet, and regular visits to a dentist for prevention, early detection and treatment.
