Proposed Paphos Gate crossing point ‘just talk’

Reports on Monday that the churches in and around Paphos Gate in Nicosia would ask the two leaders to consider opening a new pedestrian crossing point were denied but there has been talk on the subject, the Cyprus Mail learned.

The three churches are the Lain Holy Cross, the Maronite church a few yards away, and the Armenian church on the north side of the divide.

The reports in daily Phileleftheros said the three churches planned to get together to write a letter to the two leaders to ask them to consider the proposal.

But one of the Latin priests told the Cyprus Mail that nothing concrete had been decided though he had heard talk. “There are no concrete plans and we did not sign anything,” he said.

The church would however welcome such as move if it came about, he added.

Nicosia municipality declined to comment though an official there said he had heard similar rumours.

Such a crossing, if opened, would fall geographically in between the Ledra Palace and Ledra Street checkpoints.
