American president Barack Obama has named Kathleen Ann Doherty, who is currently posted to the American embassy in Rome, to take over the role of Ambassador in Nicosia.
His selection must be approved by the senate before Doherty would take over official duties.
She has been in the number two role in Rome since 2013. She has worked at the state department as assistant undersecretary for external affairs from 2011 to 2013 and director of the regional EU office from 2010 to 2011.
She has previously worked in embassies in London, Moscow, the Dominican Republic and Brazil, after starting her diplomatic career in 1990.
She is from New York and studied at the Colgate University before following post grad studies at the London School of Economics.
