Drink, be merry

By Maria Greogoriou

Every weekend is a great opportunity to get closer to a glass of wine, or a few, but this weekend things are a lot different as Nicosia is pulling out all the stops with the Nicosia Wine Weekend event.

Cyprus is on the map, as it were, for its wine, koumantaria being a brand we all know and love, so a weekend where wine makers from all over the island meet to introduce their wines to the public, is sure to help us widen our horizons on the subject, in addition to our wine cellars.

Apart from being able to taste the latest additions from local wineries (which will be put in a special glass that you will receive when you enter the exhibition), visitors can also learn about older wines as those in charge of making the nectar of the Gods will be more than happy to give a little history lesson.

You will also get a catalogue with all the wines that you can taste during the two days.

But tasting is not all that will be going on. You will also be able to take part in a special workshop, set up for you to play wine maker (for free), and there will also be a short video presentation on Cypriot wines. If you want to know more about the business of wine, you will be able to buy – for a special price – the bilingual book The Book of Cyprus Wine by Florentia Kythreotou, filled with photographs, information about wines in Cyprus and a wine map.

But you might want something to eat with all that wine. The exhibition area will also have a small area where you can enjoy some cheese platters and other dishes that go down well with wine.

Get your pallet and nose ready, it is going to be a very sweet weekend.
