Labour ministry welcomes fall in unemployment

The annual reduction of unemployment by 9.4 per cent in March is a positive development, the Ministry of Labour said on Wednesday, adding however that unemployment remained at high levels, and schemes aiming to reduce it further would continue.

The Ministry said that the number of unemployed, registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of March 2015 was 47,833, marking an annual reduction of 9.4 per cent or 4,939 persons compared with March 2014.

It added that “the number of registered unemployed has been decreasing since May 2014, compared with the corresponding months of the previous year”.
Despite this “positive development”, unemployment in Cyprus remains high, the Ministry said, noting that it will continue to implement new schemes aimed to further reduce it. (CNA)
