Prank call sparks search for lost tourists

File photo: Avakas gorge

Paphos police and firemen on Monday launched a search for lost tourists, only to find the call for help was a prank.

A Greek-speaking man called authorities to ‘inform’ them that German tourists were injured at the Avakas Gorge in the Akamas, sparking a widespread search that led to nothing.

It was later discovered that the number was from a pre paid card that had in the past, made similar prank calls to police.

A few weeks ago, German tourists had indeed been lost in the area but were found after a search.
