THE government is contemplating the creation of a coast guard aimed to control and observe all sea activities, Agriculture minister Nicos Kouyialis said yesterday at the Fishing, Boat and Outdoor Activities exhibition in Limassol.

Kouyialis said that blue economy is at the centre of his ministry’s strategy and that the existing legislation is being upgraded to apply rules and measures aimed to recover fish stocks and to provide the right tools to control fishing and the fight against illegal activity.

He added that his ministry in cooperation with the Defence and Justice ministries are exploring the possibility of creating a coast guard since there is need for a comprehensive control system.

He added that the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund 2014-2020, through the funding of fishing projects, aims to improve quality of life in coastal areas and support local communities, diversify their economies and create new jobs.
