Up for a ride?

By Maria Gregoriou

It is that time of year again – all Vespa riders should polish them up for the Fourth Cyprus Vespa and Lambretta Rally that will be making its start on Sunday from the front-left parking of My Mall in Limassol at 11am.

The event is being organised by the Vespa Club in Limassol, which started getting Vespa riders together in 2002 but was officially registered in 2012. The goal is to get people with the same interests together.

For those not sure what a Vespa is, and may want to get one and take part in the fun next year, Vespa is an Italian brand of scooter manufactured by Piaggio. In Italian the name means wasp. The buzzing sound of a wasp has nothing to do with the sound that the scooter makes, as for the lovers of this machine, it makes the sweetest sound.

The Vespa was originally a single model back in 1946 when it first came out. Today there is a full line of scooters for a rider to choose from. Their bright, vibrant colours make them a force to be plainly seen on the road.

To celebrate this yearly event there will be music, scooter games, bouncy castles, a scooter show, a raffle, Vespa Club Limassol accessories for sale, along with second hand scooter parts. If you have any second hand parts you would like to part with – helmets, lights, racks and so on – do bring them along to add to the collection and make a few bob.

All rally participants will receive one free rally sticker and free drinks. As for food, the food hall in the mall will satisfy your appetite, be it something from Greek cuisine, Chinese food, or a bit that is a little faster.

If you are going to ride, stick to the rules and park your scooters within the designated area marked out. And don’t forget to wear your helmets.
