APOEL defeats rival, as AEK moves up

APOEL

APOEL defeated Nicosia rival Omonia 3-2 at the GSP on Saturday and widened its lead at the top of the table after Apollon went down 0-2 to Larnaca side AEK.

Omonia threatened from the start with Gulon hitting the post in just the second minute, but were reduced to ten players early on when Lobianidze was sent off in the 23rd. APOEL countered but Poraise too hit the post in the 35th. But it took the leaders just a minute more to take the lead as De Vincenti scored a penalty.

Omonia made a comeback in the 54th and equalised with Asis, who kept up his scoring form soon after netted his second goal in the 56th to give his side a much wanted lead. But that was to be short-lived as APOEL’s Alexandrou scored just two minutes after that and kept the edgy game on level score.

The winner came from Tzibur in extra time that gave APOEL the extra points.

In Larnaca, AEK took down Apollon 2-0 and edged a point closer to the losers who, in turn had hoped for a win to get closer to APOEL.

Mytides opened the score with a header in the 47th after a long kick by Ortiz, and the score only improved towards the end of the game when Monteiro put in the winner in extra time, with the only other exciting moment near the end when Sangoi was sent off in the 85th.
