Man found guilty of importing mephedrone

By Constantinos Psillides

A 34-year-old man from Livadia, Larnaca district, was found guilty by the Larnaca Assize court for importing 112 kilos of mephedrone, with the intent to ship it to the UK.

Mephodrone, also known as 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC) or 4-methylephedrone, is a synthetic stimulant drug of the amphetamine and cathinone classes.

Sentencing will be decided on May 19.

The 34-year-old was arrested on May 24, 2014 when he attempted to clear four plastic barrels containing the drug through customs at Larnaca airport. The barrels had arrived from Mumbai, India, through Dubai.

When the 34-year-old signed all documents – he was planning to ship the drugs to London – Drugs Squad officers arrested him. They found €1,000 in his possession along with documents to ship the barrels to the UK.

A 50-year-old man from Potamia village was also arrested after police found his name on the manifest. After spending 11 months in jail, the 50-year old was cleared of all charges.
