Arrested for smuggling bananas

A 70-year-old Greek Cypriot man, driving a refrigerator truck, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with smuggling bananas from Turkey to the government controlled areas.

Police said the truck was located by members of the drug squad close to the Astromeritis check point and after a search, some two tonnes of bananas were found inside.

According to reports, the bananas, whose production country is Equador, were imported from Turkey to the north and from then smuggled into the Republic. Their final destination was to be a Greek Cypriot fruit seller.

Both the truck and its container were confiscated.

The case is being investigated by Customs.
