A minute with Tonia Mishiali Screenwriter and Filmmaker

Where do you live?
I live in Nicosia with my daughter and husband

Best childhood memory?
Spending every summer of the late 70s – early 80s at the beach with my grandparents and cousins

Most frequented restaurant and absolute favourite dish? What food would you really turn your nose up to?
I go to Wagamama’s quite often as it’s one of my daughter’s favourite restaurants (it’s one of the places where we can have a mother-daughter chat). I love curry dishes and I can never say no to fresh home-made fries. I have never tried snails and I don’t intend to.

What did you have for breakfast?
I had coffee, a barley cracker and some anari cheese.

Would you class yourself as a day or night person? What’s your idea of the perfect night/day out?
I used to be a night person. Since I had my daughter I had no choice but to become a day person. My idea of the perfect day out would be to get my camera and go to a place that I never visited before and go crazy taking photos.

Best book ever read?
Lord of the Flies. It’s not the best book I’ve ever read but it is one of the first English books I laid my hands on (when I was a teenager) and it made such a big impact on me! The characters were so real…

Favourite film of all time?
Hmmm… I have a lot of favourites. It depends on my mood… or the day… Today, it would be The Broken Circle Breakdown. It’s one of my favourite films of 2012. Loved the directing, the style, the music, the acting… and it made me not be able to sleep for months – it was very intense!

Favourite holiday destination (or best holiday ever taken) and why? What’s your dream trip?
I just love London and I had the best time ever when I took my daughter there for the first time. I was very happy that she loved it too even though she was only five. I have a lot of places that I want to visit including Cuba, Morocco, Mexico, Japan, India…

What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
Nothing specific. I just have the radio on but I usually don’t even listen to it as I tend to daydream a lot while driving.

What is always in your fridge?
Aloe Vera Juice – it’s good for all kinds of things… It’s like my First Aid kit…

Dream house: rural retreat or urban dwelling? Where would it be, what would it be like?
Again… I like both… So since it’s a ‘dream’ house I can have two right? So I would have one of each: one on the mountain under big trees in the forest by a small stream, where I can be away from civilization and I can just write. The other, a penthouse in the centre of town from where I can walk to almost any place in the city, shop, sit in cafés in the old town and catch up with friends.

If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
Again, so many people… but today I would feel like going out with… Pedro Almodovar. I need a piece of advice from him for my next film!

If the world is ending in 24 hours what would you do?
Spend all 24 hours with my family.

What is your greatest fear?
Anything bad happening to my daughter.

Tell me a joke…
‘0’ (zero) is walking down the street, sees ‘8’ (eight) coming from the opposite direction, and says to it: “Nice belt!”
