Classical meets contemporary

By Maria Gregoriou

They say that for many things it takes two and there will be two musicians performing chamber music with a twist tomorrow in Nicosia.

Duo Christof Moser and Maria Petrova will master the piano and drums to bring us a completely new classical music experience. How can it be classic and new at the same time? Well the pair put on a show of the classics with a modern interpretation.

Moser and Petrova create their own compositions and innovative arrangements to pay homage to three centuries of old masters and their music.

Their free-spirited approach to musical monuments opens new perspectives and gives a fresh understanding of classical masterpieces. But these musical melodies are not the only kinds that the musicians reach for, they also go further into the contemporary ocean of tunes and put on a little rock music and create the music to accompany film.

Their debut album piano*drum Vorspiel came out in 2010 and the unique music they create has been performed live in concert in Vienna, Berlin, Zurich, Los Angeles, Riga, Ankara and Plodiv.

Petrova, from Bulgaria, started taking piano and drums lessons in Plovdiv and then moved on to study drums and percussion at the Gustav Mahler Conservatory, Vienna Conservatory and University of Music and Performing Arts.

She has co-operated with a number of musicians, including Rondo Vienna, Wiener Tschuschenkapelle, Drumatical Theater, and Willi Resitarits. She also teaches music.

Moser, who is from Austria, studied piano at the Conservatory Vorarlberg and piano and classical drums at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna.

The pianist has given solo performances as well as creating music with Vienna Philharminist Rainer Honeck, further with Claire Dolby, Richard Hyung-ki Joo, Betty S, Sumitra, Leni Lust, and others on stage.

Moser also dabs in teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

For all those ready to enter a different musical room at the cultural centre of the European University tomorrow, get ready to be amazed at the sounds of Bach, Vivaldi, Bartok, Gulda, Einaudi, Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode, and some original pieces by Moser.
