MEP Papadakis to take on as rapporteur on immigration

MEP Demetris Papadakis

Cypriot MEP Dimitris Papadakis takes on as rapporteur on the issue of immigration, on behalf of the EP Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET).

In statements to CNA in Strasbourg Papadakis explained that in cooperation with the Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) he will prepare a report which will be put before the Committee next Tuesday for a first discussion.

He pointed out that his aim is not to focus on addressing the phenomenon after it takes place, but rather to concentrate on taking proactive measures.

Papadakis said that we need to have political stability in the regions where huge influxes of migrants and refugees flee from.

He added that the main goal should also be to bring production means to the regions that experience poverty to create better conditions that will allow people to stay in their countries and not become refugees.

According to Papadakis, creating reception areas for the migrants is also an issue that needs to be addressed as well as equal burden sharing.

The report will be tabled before the LIBE and then the AFET and after discussions, it will be submitted to the plenary.
