US House asks for report on Cyprus’ defence capabilities

The US House of Representatives has asked the State Department to submit a report on the defence capabilities of the Republic of Cyprus, in an effort to lift the US embargo of arms to Cyprus, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Wednesday.

The President of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) Nick Larigakis informed the House President Yiannakis Omirou of the development during a meeting in Nicosia

Omirou said during the meeting they discussed t actions and initiatives aiming to promote the interests of the Republic of Cyprus and the Cypriot people in the US, focusing on the “unacceptable” US arms embargo, which has been in place since after the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Larigakis said actions which were underway were only the beginning of the effort to lift the “illegal embargo on a country which offers a lot to the US” especially for the stability which the US needs in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean.

He said the suggestion concerned a request to the US State Department to submit within 90 days a report on the Republic of Cyprus` ability for effective defence  and any problems that may arise.

He said that the report would be used for lifting the embargo but pointed out that this was not an easy issue.
He also recalled that a similar embargo on Turkey after the invasion had lasted only three years until it was lifted by President Jimmy Carter. (CNA)
