DNA confirms murder victim’s identity

DNA tests have confirmed that 39-year old businessman Michalis “Mike” Anastasi — AKA Shailos — was the man found shot and burnt in a car near Xylophagou last Saturday, police said.

The pathologist’s report showed that the victim was shot twice, in the head and chest. The crime took place inside British bases territory.

Dhekelia police are looking into the victim’s professional dealings in a bid to find answers.

It was reported last week that the victim may have had dealings with the underworld.

The victim had been the target of a murder attempt in December 23, 2013, in which he was seriously injured.

He was shot three times while exiting a coffee shop in Xylophagou with two friends.

Police said then that Anastasi was shot by assailants in a car. He suffered two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and one to his right arm.

He was rushed to Paralimni hospital where he underwent surgery. The shooter was never identified.
