Who run the world?

By Maria Gregoriou

TEDx is back again but this time with a twist, well a number of twists actually. First of all its title is Creating Momentum at TEDx Nicosia Women, so it about the women behind the inspirational talks. Second there will be five speakers from Cyprus speaking live. Thirdly – probably the most exciting part – the event will feature part of the webcast of the TEDWomen taking place in California. And fourthly, there are only 100 places for anyone interested to join the absolutely free TEDx experience.

But the event is not only limited to Cyprus and California, all in all there will be over 150 events around the world sharing live streams and presenting local speakers. The hope is to create a global conversation to share experiences.

So now you roughly know the kind of ride you can expect to take with the TEDxers on Friday, on to the women speakers who will talk about and explore the bold ideas that create momentum in how we think, live and work.

Dr Yasmin Ohlsson, a trained UK doctor, nutritional adviser and accredited coach, is the Cyprus representative for the European Society of Lifestyle Medicine. Ohlsson’s mission is “to create a healthier future for everyone by establishing a culture of proactive living that improves physical and mental health, prevents disease and reduces reliance on medication.”

Gender and development expert Sophia Papastavrou will give a talk entitled About a Girl: Identity Matters.

Papastavrou holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Anthropology and a Master of Arts in Sociology. She has worked for United Nations agencies and non-governmental organisations in Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Cyprus, Uganda and Ghana, including internships with the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Communications at the Secretariat in New York.

Joining the speakers will be Alexia Paraskeva who will give an acting performance. Paraskeva has given theatrical performances in Cyprus and the UK and in a number of films. She has also directed a number of plays as well as teaching drama.

The actress is very much passionate about what she does and says “I love the challenge of playing other roles and losing myself in characters’ worlds. It is a form of therapy, escapism from reality and my daily routine to a safe place, the stage, where I can literally transform into someone else and lose myself for a few hours.”

Talking on the challenge of a woman, Vice Consul at the British High Commission in Nicosia, Christina Smith will be the fourth speaker of the day.

Smith grew up in the UK, where she had a long career in the local government sector working with councillors, communities and police officers both in London and Manchester.

The fifth speaker will be Patricia Martin, a A U.S. Fulbright who worked in Cyprus to implement ONE WOMAN AT A TIME (OWAAT), a community-court collaboration aimed at empowering abused women to become self-represented civil litigant claimants for emergency protections to prevent violations of their human right to privacy.  Martin guided Cypriots to create and launch the first “Zero Tolerance of Abuse Against Women” National Campaign, and the international virtual blueprint for abused women to self-help and end their abuse, absent violence

These five women will inspire and lead the way to creating momentum.
