New law will offer LGBT protection

Chairman of the House Legal Affairs Committee Sotiris Sampson

PARLIAMENT is expected on Thursday to criminalise unacceptable behaviour and violence against people based on their sexual orientation.

Chairman of the House Legal Affairs Committee Sotiris Sampson said the criminal code would be amended to include unacceptable behaviour and incitement to violence based on an individual’s sexual orientation.

Based on the offence, the perpetrator would face up to three years in jail or a fine of up to €5,000, or both.

Sampson said the offence could be threatening or insulting behaviour.

The DISY MP said the amendment had been in the pipeline for some time now and had nothing to do with a government bill on civil partnerships.
