Here he comes to save the day

By Maria Gregoriou

If Ralph Fiennes was playing at a theatre near you, you most probably would be booking your tickets as we speak. Even though that is a very nice idea, he hasn’t expressed a will to perform on the island, rather his performance in Man and Superman as given at the National Theatre will be screened in Limassol on Wednesday.

This witty and provocative classic by George Bernard Shaw is a romantic comedy that should not be missed by anyone with a sense of humour, a love of the theatre and a taste for romance.

Fiennes plays Jack Tanner, a radical thinker, rich bachelor and guardian to the alluring heiress Ann.

Although Ann is in love with a poet, she decides to marry and tame the revolutionary. But before Ann can put her plan into action, Tanner is tipped off and flees to Spain.

Now this next part may seem a bit far-fetched but while in Spain he is captured by bandits and meets the devil. Whether this heaven versus hell scenario is real or just part of a dream sequence, you will have to discover for yourself.

Man and Superman
Screening of the performance from the National Theatre. June 3. Rialto theatre, Limassol. 8.30pm. €10/7. With English and Greek subtitles. Tel: 77-777745
