Nicosia wants to beef up parking in old town

NICOSIA municipality wants to implement measures that will make the old town safer for pedestrians and drivers, combating congestion and parking.

Following a study conducted by the municipality, some of the recommended changes include adding poles on pavements, flexible poles on tarmac, 50 new motorcycle parking spots and 22 for other vehicles.

Bicycles will have designated parking spaces, while traffic wardens will increase parking checks particularly on Saturdays. Road signs and yellow lines on the street will be repainted once the move goes ahead.

One of the municipality’s primary aims is to ensure emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks can drive through safely without causing any inconveniences or major upheavals, as well as making drivers utilise public parking area in Ledras, Faneromeni, Tripoli and Kostanza and other private parking places.

In the meantime, they are also looking to create more parking spaces within the old town and outside.

The municipality said it would start off with warning tickets once the measures are implemented but would then proceed to issuing parking fines in due course.
