Remembering a dream

By Maria Gregoriou

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra (CySO) will perform its first summer concert on Friday under the name If You Remember My Dream.

The concert is a tribute to Greece and Cyprus and presents melodies, rhythms, images and emotions from Cypriot Medieval history and myth, together with beloved songs and dances.

The concert will feature soloist Aliki Chrysochou, members of CySO and conductor Alkis Baltas.

If you are not a fan of talent shows than you won’t recognise Chrysochou from her audition on the seventh season of Britain’s Got Talent in 2013, when after giving an amazing audition, Simon Cowell said ‘You just have a natural talent Aliki… your time has come!’

And come it did. Since then Chrysochou has become an internationally acclaimed soprano.

She has been honored with the title ‘Global Honorary Ambassador’ of the World Encephalitis Society with a very active and primary role into the society’s global charity projects, and in 2014 she was nominated for Woman of the year in the artist category for Madam Figaro magazine Awards.

The British-Cypriot Soprano has performed in concerts as a soloist in numerous countries around the world, including the USA, Canada, Mexico, Canary Islands, Greece, France and the UK.

Graduating from Sheffield University with a Bachelor of Music, majoring in both piano and voice, Chrysochou then moved to New York to study Musical Theatre and Drama at HB Studio with a scholarship, followed by further classical studies with renowned teachers and coaches such as Steven Crawford, one of the conductors of the Metropolitan Opera.

2015 finds Aliki busy with concerts around the world and more importantly the recording of her début album.

The programme for If You Remember My Dream includes five Greek dances for strings by Nikolaos Skalkottas, Franz Schubert’s Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus, D. 797: Ballet Music, Arodafnousa: Fantasy on a Cypriot Medieval melody and three Cypriot folk songs by Alkis Baltas.

You will also have the chance to listen to a selection of songs from My Fair Lady by Frederic Loewe, There Once Was a Time by Stavros Xarhakos, If You Remember My Dream by Mikis Theodorakis and In This Boat, Now That You are Off to Foreign Lands, and The Moon is Red by Manos Hadjidakis.
