The cabinet, at the request of the health ministry has abolished all charges for blood transfusions and they will be given free to all under the decision, an announcement said on Wednesday.
Currently there is a charge of €200 for a blood transfusion for those not entitled to free medical care.
The announcement said the reasons for the decision were ethical as the blood used is not purchased but given freely by donors and “should not be subject to any formal or informal commercialisation”.
“The Ministry of Health decided it wanted to put an end to a wrong practice. Therefore, the blood transfusions will be provided now free to all patients,” the announcement said.
It added that the issue had been examined by the government’s finance agencies, which had given the green light to the health ministry.
At the same time, a certification process for the blood bank is expected to be completed before the end of the year that would greatly enhance the testing of blood across the island.
