Cytavision scraps BBC Entertainment

By Andria Kades

BBC Entertainment is no longer available through Cytavision as it was not proving to be cost effective, CyTA said on Monday.

The telecommunications company, which said the channel was not appealing to a wide market, scrapped the channel without any notification to its subscribers.

BBC Entertainment offers a wide range of top BBC shows including soap opera EastEnders, game show The Weakest Link and weekly chat show Alan Carr Chatty Man. It also shows top BBC dramas even though many are some years old.

“Every night my wife used to watch the Weakest Link and one night she told me the channel wasn’t working. What do you mean it’s not working I asked her?” Lakis Charalambous said.

Although CyTA said on Monday the company had received numerous complaints from upset viewers, the company said it was clear that “there were few viewers but very loyal” to the channel as their statistics showed that there was not much demand.

CyTA spokesperson Lefteris Christou would not reveal any concrete numbers. However, he stressed that the company had exerted several efforts to try and make BBC Entertainment appeal to a broader market.

“We discussed with the provider if they could add Greek subtitles and they refused so we didn’t renew the contract.”

Charlambous however noted that when channels are removed from the service, the price stays the same.

“We pay a set price for a number of channels. When these are reduced the price doesn’t change. Of course they (CyTA) are covered in the small print that nobody reads.”

His wife Rosie Charalambous said “it’s like paying a price for a packet of cigarettes and then seeing there’s 19 there instead on 20 all the while the price is going up.”

Jenny Markou also enjoyed watching BBC Entertainment. “It was useful to fill an hour or so. You could watch your soaps like EastEnders and all the comedy shows – they were a few weeks late but it was there and easily available. I’m bereft now it’s suddenly gone.”

Cyta’s spokesperson however added that numerous channels were constantly being added to the package trying to offer customers the best quality. “Eurosport 1 and 2 have recently been added and soon we will add FOX Sports,” he said.

“For the same price viewers can enjoy new channels such as NH1 classics and Nickelodeon.”
