Farmer in ICU after fire in hay bales

A 50-year-old man is in serious condition at Nicosia Hospital’s ICU with severe burns after he was engulfed by flames as he tried to put a fire near his farm in Yeri.

Police said that the fire broke out in hay bales located outside the man’s farm at around 6pm on Monday.

The man, who reportedly tried to extinguish the flames himself using a mini digger but was engulfed by the flames and suffered extensive burns.

He was transferred to the Nicosia General Hospital where he was intubated.

The fire, which was put out by the fire service, destroyed some 200 hay bales whose estimated value was €8,000, and the digger worth around €9,000.
