In paintings we live

By Maria Gregoriou

The Alpha C.K. Art Gallery in Nicosia will be welcoming us all today at 7pm for the opening of the solo painting exhibition by Marina Olympios Lycourgos entitled Painting is my Resistance 2010-2015.

As suggested by the title, the exhibition will showcase works which Lycourgos has created during the past five years.

As an introduction to the work to be displayed, the artist says: “Matter stumbles out of its forms. That’s how I have been painting for five years. That’s how I have lived, that’s how I have walked. Under this title, I am presenting 55 paintings, testimonies and the Manifesto installation.”

Lycourgos goes on to explain that paintings can say things that words can’t and they also help us live life and not just be a spectator. By this the painter suggests that we use our senses to move within the colours of the paintings, and to think freely.

The artist has had several solo exhibitions hosted in Cyprus, Greece, France and America. Some of her work can be seen at the Gallery of Contemporary Cypriot Art, at the National Bank of Greece and at the Cultural Institute of the Bank of Cyprus.

The exhibition will run until July 4.
