President Nicos Anastasiades had on Thursday, from Brussels, a telephone communication with the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, following his meeting on Wednesday with the President of the European Council Donald Tusk.
According to a written statement from government spokesman Nikos Christodoulides, Anastasiades briefed the Egyptian head of state on the results of Nicosia’s initiative.
Anastasiades’ initiative aims to invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas to speak separately before the European Council on the problems in the Middle East, and in particular to give their take on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
On Thursday evening, Anastasiades was due to speak on the phone with Abbas, and then on Friday morning with Netanyahu, informing them of his actions.
Anastasiades has also briefed EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini of his initiative. Mogherini is due to pay an official visit to Cyprus on July 24, the statement added.
