Storytelling magic

By Maria Gregoriou

This is for those of us who are young and would like to learn how to get our thoughts out in drawing and those of us who feel young, have young children or who – whatever age you are – just love to listen to a good story read to us.

The last reading of a children’s book by Evgenios Trivizas will take place tomorrow at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation – where an exhibition showcasing some of the writer’s characters, ideas and puppets is still running.

Over the past few months the foundation has given us a look into the worlds that Trivizas has created for children with stories about ladybirds and their spots, kings and salt and now it is a hunter in a yellow hat, a blue bird and a few other animals’ turn to crawl out of the pages and live among us – only for a short while, don’t contact the zoo just yet.

The characters will come alive through the narration given by the actress Marina Maleni at 11am.

There is a lot of comparison of the story with that of Curious George so if you have told your kids that story and they were wide-eyed with wonder, get ready to hear a lot about this story, which is called Where Ever it Goes, Go.

But be warned, entrance will be strictly prohibited to hunters wearing a yellow hat.

A second upcoming event also calls for use of the imagination. Illustrator and artist Zoe Pinches is organising a series of three artist workshops in Paphos for girls who want to learn about getting the images from their head onto paper.

Pinches’ objective is to get girls away from just passively spending time in front of the computer screen and to get them to create their own material to be put out there.

The girls will learn all about self-published magazines (or zines) and why this kind of publishing can foster self-expression. Pinches believes that this is a great outlet for girls who are still forming their identity, but – she stresses – it is also about having some summer fun.

The first session, which will take place on Tuesday, will teach girls how to tackle the blank page, how to make what you do your own and, therefore, make your mark.

By the end of the workshops the girls will have taken their doodling to the next level, they will have completed a summer journal filled with sketches and ideas (rather than long description of what the day was like at the beach)

The second workshop, on July 28, will cover printing and lettering while the third and last workshop – on August 25 – will be about binding and formats.
Pinches is a freelance illustrator originally from the UK.
