Primary school teachers stage demo

Primary school teachers protested outside parliament on Tuesday during a House Education Committee discussion on the new appointment system.

The new system, which the government is pushing to have passed before the House summer recess, has been approved by higher education teachers but primary teachers’ union POED has expressed concerns whether all substitute teachers will be employed before the new system is introduced.

To that end they have asked the ministry double to 1,000 the number of permanent posts given to them.
POED said they were reassured by education minister Costas Kadis that he will discuss with them a proposal to include all substitute teachers in the appointments made from September and until 2018, before the new candidate lists are introduced.
