Fewer unemployed in May

People queuing up to register as unemployed

THE number of registered unemployed dropped 9.1 per cent to 40,876 in May from a year earlier, the statistical services Cystat said.

According to the data, June saw the 14th consecutive annual reduction of unemployed persons since May 2014 and the third largest from March this year (-9.36 per cent) and May (-9.35 per cent). The number of jobless peaked in February 2014 at 53,204 persons.

The reduction is attributed mainly to hirings in construction where the number of jobless dropped  by 1,292  persons, financial and insurance activities by 793 persons, trade 779 persons, manufacturing 666 persons, education 366 persons and a drop in newcomers in the labour market of 703.

In June, the registered unemployed persons increased in the sectors of accommodation and food service activities by 319 and transportation by 273.
On a monthly basis, the number of jobless rose 3.03 per cent in May.
