Putting ideas to work

By Maria Gregoriou

The season is full of festivals and one just around the corner is the third Xarkis Festival that will take place from Friday until Sunday in Lofou in the Limassol district.

The three-day festival is getting bigger and better than its predecessors, as this year it includes a wider schedule with educational workshops, presentations on various topics, performances and music.

Although the main festival is coming up this weekend, some workshops have already started in the centre of the village and will continue until and during the launch of the festival.

The scope of the ten workshops on offer this year – and the festival in general – is to offer visitors an authentic experience of Cypriot culture, while also engaging in a dialogue about social sustainability.

So by spending some time in a traditional village, getting to know about local and folk culture, by blending this with aspects of our modern culture – be that the internet or a camera – we can get our creative juices going. While some of us will love to create (these could be innovate ideas used for social good), others will love to watch the creative process. But no matter which one of the two you are, you will surely get the chance to talk about your experience, meet new people and maybe open yourself up to a different way of living.

Some of the activities will be oral narratives of our shared past, or the organisation of interdisciplinary workshops with the collaboration of local producers and contemporary designers that have the capacity to bring people from different generations and backgrounds together.

One event that might catch your interest is the Innovative Gym that will take place at 9pm on Friday.

Innovative Gym by ARTos Foundation and its artistic director Achilleas Kentonis is a research lab dedicated to the discovery of new ways to invest and/or, re-invent by mind shifting and the use of already existing knowledge and experience.

Participants will learn how to speed up the process and minimise the risks of failure of their goals and ideas.

This workshop is perfect for people who have start-up ideas or thoughts about how something which already exists can be taken to the next level.

So if you are determined or planning to develop or invest in something new or to extend on an existing idea, if you are curious and have an adventurous mind, then this workshop suits you.

Even if you don’t have a specific idea in mind just yet, but you are looking for some inspiration to feed your mind then again Innovative Gym will help you flex those brain muscles.

There are only 12 spaces available for this workshop. Participation cost is €50 and to book a reservation send an email to [email protected] or [email protected], or call the ARTos Foundation on 22 445455, Xarkis–Nicosia on 97-676011 or Xarkis-Limassol on 99-519407.

If you are interested in the other workshops available, presentation and what kind of music will be coming up, go to the event’s Facebook page where new information is constantly being posted.
