Salonica songs

By Maria Gregoriou

Hoping to give us a small glimpse into what Thessaloniki means to them and everyone who calls the city their home, Greek singer Savina Yannatou and her band Primavera en Salonico will present the concert Songs of Salonica – which is also the name of their new album – on Thursday in Nicosia.

Yannatou took classical guitar lessons and studied singing at an early age. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and then began working professionally. Her first album, Edo Lilipoupolis, was released in 1981.

After releasing a number of other solo albums and working with many Greek composers, Yannatou began to work with selected jazz/ traditional musicians.

The singer and her five-member band will give a tour of Thessaloniki through their own music, which is based on traditional material.

Get ready for a jazzy avant-garde kind of night, where tradition and free-flowing music unite to create a love of one’s roots and a love of discovering how you can take that to the next level.

Savina Yannatou and Primavera en Salonico
Live performance by the musicians. July 16. Cultural Centre of the University of Cyprus, Nicosia. 8.30pm. €10/5. Tel: 22-894531
