Juncker to have lunch with Anastasiades and Akinci (update with planned anti-austerity protest)

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will have a joint lunch with President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on Thursday during his two day visit beginning on Thursday.

According to an announcement from the Commission, on the first day of his visit, Juncker will have bilateral meetings with Anastasiades and Akinci.  Later in the day, he and the two leaders will have lunch together at a Nicosia’s buffer zone venue. Juncker will also meet the United Nations Secretary General Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide.

“I am visiting Cyprus at a time when there is a unique opportunity to achieve a lasting, comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue” said Juncker.

“The present status quo is unacceptable and it benefits no one. I salute the courage and vision of the two leaders, Nicos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci, who are showing great commitment in their efforts to achieve the reunification of their country. I want to assure them and the people of Cyprus that in these efforts they have the full and unwavering support of the European Commission”.

On the second day of his visit, Juncker will meet the Speaker of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou and the leaders of the political parties. Later in the day, he will address a plenary session of the House.

The Trade Union Platform announced on Tuesday they would be organising an anti-austerity protest outside the House during Juncker’s address on Friday against the policies “imposed coercively by the Troika which leads to the impoverishment of the people.” The protest will begin at 11am. The platform said more information would be announced on Wednesday .
