UNFICYP renewal due to be adopted on July 29

UNFICYP has been in Cyprus since 1964

The UN Security Council is expected to adopt a resolution renewing UNFICYP`s mandate on July 29.

The draft was presented to the Council permanent members by the UK and on Wednesday July 22 the UNSC will be briefed on recent developments in Cyprus by UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide and UNSG Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Battenheim.

According to sources, the draft welcomes the resumption of the talks and the continuous commitment of the leaders of the island`s two communities, and the negotiators to conclude a comprehensive agreement.

Leaders and negotiators are also encouraged to decisively seize the opportunity to reach a comprehensive solution. The draft also commends the role of the UNSG Special Adviser on Cyprus and notes the UNSG`s intention to submit a separate report on his Good Offices Mission. (CNA)
