Bar review: Ta Mpania, Paphos

By Bejay Browne

This venue with the perfect setting has just undergone major refurbishment and recently re-opened boasting new furnishings and décor.

In the heart of Kato Paphos, right on the sea, the views of the harbour and castle are stunning. This is also an area where swimmers plunge into the waters all year long.

The venue ticks all boxes; restaurant, café and lounge bar and is spacious and comfortable. The service and menu are much improved but prices are slightly on the high side.

A number of the tables at one end are carved out of wood and although pleasant to look at, not always practical. Our cheeseburgers were served on wooden plates too large for us to sit opposite each other, so we ended up eating at opposite ends of the table, with our drinks down the middle.

The ample shade provides welcome relief from the summer sun, although a few tables are unshaded and often frequented by tanned holidaymakers enjoying a cooling beer.

There are still a few glitches which need to be sorted out, such as the music, which was being played from Spotify including a host of adverts for the service, which was annoying.

Most of the soft drinks seem to be served by soda gun, which is not to everyone’s taste and mine was flat, but whisked away and changed by the manager, with no problem.

Overall, the drinks menu is what you would expect and includes everything from soft drinks, to teas and coffees, beers, cocktails and wine. The venue also offers Coke Floats, which have been a favourite treat of children for decades.

This is a popular and busy venue, especially during peak times and a favourite of tourists and residents. It’s also suitable for families.

The menu is extensive and includes platters, Cypriot cuisine, grills, steaks and seafood, burgers, pizza, breakfast and vegetarian options.

Their burgers are good, tasty and well-priced. This is a venue to go for the views and the atmosphere, which changes once the sun sets.

It’s also a good place to drop by and catch up with friends. Staff are friendly and efficient and of all different nationalities.
