Line up for documentaries

By Maria Gregoriou

Cinemagoers and documentary fans will be glad to know that August will be bringing with it the tenth Lemesos International Documentary Festival.

The festival, starting on August 1, will screen 21 handpicked documentaries, which have been selected from some of the best documentary festivals in the world. As the audience’s response to the documentaries was a leading criterion in the selection, you can be assured that the realities unfolding on screen will pleasantly surprise.

Ranging across diverse themes, the documentaries will talk about people who have survived a genocide; inspiring people and artists; activists that have changed the world and minority groups that stood up for their rights. Awarded documentaries from across the globe will uncover a reality less talked about.

Documentary professionals, including world-renowned documentary maker Kim Longinotto – whose documentary Dreamcatcher will be screened – will also be present at the screenings for a chat. Longinotto will also deliver a master class on her work and generally on the art of documentary.

Other documentaries to be screened include Bikes Vs Cars by Fredrik Gertten, which looks into the daily global drama of traffic around the world, and Beloved Days by Constantinos Patsalides (the only Cypriot documentary in the mix).

Brett Mogen will look at the life of Kurt Cobain, Hubert Sauper takes on the subject of colonialism in We Come As Friends, and Seam McAllister takes us on a five year journey of looking into political freedom in the west in A Syrian Love Story.
