UNFICYP’s mandate renewed

THE UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously renewed UNFICYP’s mandate for another six months, until January 31, 2016.

In its resolution, the SC encouraged the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to grasp the current opportunity with determination to secure a comprehensive settlement of the island’s division.

It welcomed the resumption of negotiations and “the positive momentum and the commitment expressed by the leaders to work tirelessly to reach a comprehensive settlement as soon as possible.”

It also called upon the two leaders to put their efforts behind further work on reaching convergences on the core issues.

The Council also called on all parties involved to provide more expeditious, full access to all areas, given the need to intensify the work of the Committee on Missing Persons.
