Fan arrested trying to sneak flares into stadium

The football fan ID cards were introduced to curb football violence

A 20-year-old man from Limassol was arrested on Thursday night while trying to sneak flares into the Antonis Papadopoulos stadium in Larnaca, which was hosting a Europa League football match.

The suspect was arrested after he was spotted through surveillance cameras trying to sneak a backpack with 63 flares into the stadium where the match between Limassol’s Apollon and Azebaijani side Gabala was to take place.

The 20-year-old was trying to pull the backpack inside the stadium but it got caught on a pole.

Police recovered the bag and managed to identify and locate the suspect through the security cameras. He was arrested immediately after the end of the game, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
