Number of fires drop in Paphos

The number calls relating to fires in the Paphos district fell to 471 between January and July, from 564 in the same period last year, the fire services said on Tuesday.Extinguishing rural fires is one of the most difficult and persistent problems they face, the fire brigade said.

“It is necessary to raise public awareness and each community should have its own volunteer group equipped with basic tools to extinguish a small fire,” the department reported, adding that “already, in Paphos 59 communities have small fire trucks, while 45 have voluntary firefighting teams.

“The fire brigade trains rural volunteers and an additional 42 seasonal fire fighters are employed for the summer.  Land owners, farmers and the owners of holiday homes are urged to remove dry grass around their properties.
