Three fires that broke out one after the other in the Limassol district on Monday afternoon were well under control by late in the evening, the interior ministry said.

The first fire broke out in the Listovounos area between Parekklisia and Prastio Kellaki at around 2pm. It burned around eight hectares of wild shrubs, olive and carob trees.

The fire between Kyvides and Souni, broke out at around 4.20pm, but it didn’t take crews too long to contain it. It burned around four hectares of wild shrubs.

At around 6pm, another fire broke out, near Pyrgos and Parekklisia, off the Nicosia-Limassol motorway. The fire was in a hard-to-reach area and three helicopters and the forestry department’s airplane were enlisted to assist the firemen. Five hectares of shrubs were burned.

The interior ministry said in an announcement that the fire service, game and fauna, civil defence, and forestry department crews remained on site on Monday night to ensure the fires did not reignite.

“Even though all three fires were consecutive, all units were perfectly coordinated, both in the air and on land,” the announcement said.

The public is urged to be especially careful and avoid burning dry weeds or throwing cigarette butts.

The causes of the fires are under investigation.
