Suspect punches officer during questioning

A female police officer was punched in the face on Sunday while questioning a 25-year-old man suspected of trying to steal from a church in Ayia Napa.

The man, from Nicosia, was arrested at about 10.40am on Sunday after eyewitnesses told police that he, along another man, 30, also from Nicosia, had tried to steal from the church’s donations box.

They were taken to the local police station for questioning. During the process, the 25-year-old assaulted and punched the officer in the face.

She was taken to Famagusta general hospital but because it was busy, she was transferred to a private clinic where she was treated and released.

The man has been detained.
