Eide in Ankara to discuss property, territory and guarantees

UN Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide

UN Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide was due in Ankara today for contacts on the Cyprus problem, specifically on issues of property, territory and guarantees, reports said.

Eide is expected to meet with Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu.

The UN special envoy will not be returning to Cyprus until the last week of August when he will meet the two negotiators Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami prior to the resumption of leaders’ meetings on September 1.

The leaders have repeatedly said they would discuss territory and guarantees towards the end of the negotiations. They have already agreed to respect the individual’s right to property  – both owners and current users – for which they have come under fire, and to set up a property commission that will decide on individual cases based on compensation, exchange or return.
