A 78-year-old man, Stylianos Iordanous died in a car crash on Wednesday on the Dhekelia to Ayia Napa motorway, which was shut down for several hours.
Another man, Iosif Stylianou, 42, from Avgorou, was involved in the collision. He is being treated at Famagusta general hospital in serious but not life threatening condition.
Iordanous had set off from his home in Nicosia at 8.30am, and was headed to Protaras, where his children were holidaying.
For reasons still being investigated he stopped his saloon car on the hard shoulder.
Stylianou slammed into the back of Iordanou’s small saloon car, pushing it along 30 metres down the motorway. It then took another 20 metres before the 78-year-old’s car finally came to a stop.
The car was destroyed.
Such was the force of the collision, that the 42-year-old had to be freed by the fire service.
The incident took place inside the British bases (SBA).
According to a police spokesman, the reason why Iordanou’s had stopped was still unknown. It also looked like that the 78-year-old had exited his car and was standing on the tarmac when the crash occurred.
The road was shut down for six hours and drivers were diverted through the village of Xylophagou. It opened shortly after 3pm.
Dhekelia police are investigating the case.
