Woman in north dies after balcony fall to escape husband

A woman who fell off a balcony in the north while trying to escape her abusive husband has died, Turkish Cypriot media reported on Wednesday.

Nilgun Urhan died on Tuesday. She had been in hospital since Saturday night after falling from a height of around seven metres, Kibris Postasi said.

Urhan was trying to get away from her abusive husband by jumping to the neighbours’ house from the balcony of her home.

Her husband Serdal Urhan said he had beaten her over a text message she had received.

He was initially detained in connection with causing grievous bodily harm but he was now looking at manslaughter charges, KP said.
